The Automation Priority ScorerRank what to automate first
List the processes that eat your week and score each one 1 to 5 on how often it runs, how long it takes and what a mistake costs. We multiply the three, the method from What Should You Automate First?, and rank them.
Your ranking
Score all three factors for a process and it appears here, ranked.
How the scores work
Score = Frequency × Time × Error risk, from 1 to 125. 30 or more: automate now. 20 to 29: high priority. Under 20: it can wait.
| Factor | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | Quarterly or ad hoc | Monthly | Weekly | A few times a week | Daily or continuous |
| Time | Under 5 minutes | 5 to 30 minutes | 30 to 60 minutes | 1 to 3 hours | 3 hours or more |
| Error risk | Trivial, fixes itself | A few minutes of cleanup | Delays or 30+ minutes of cleanup | Customers notice or it costs money | Lost revenue, compliance or clients |
Common questions
Why multiply the three scores instead of adding them?
Multiplying makes the outliers stand out. A task that runs daily, takes real time and causes costly mistakes jumps far ahead of one that is only bad on a single factor, which is the order you want to fix them in.
What score means a process is worth automating now?
30 or more. Between 20 and 29 is a high priority for the next round. Under 20 can usually wait, unless its mistakes are catastrophic.
What if my top process is hard to automate?
Pick the highest score that is also easy to build: standard tools, clear rules, no judgment calls. Then price that one with the Manual Tax Calculator to see what fixing it is worth.
